Augusta, ME – On March 8, 2023 Harvard Law School lecturer and former Maine Attorney General James E. Tierney will discuss how state attorneys general are impacting our nation’s legal landscape.
Although all attorneys general continue to provide daily legal services to government, each office also possesses broad jurisdiction and discretion along with a sweeping independence from the rest of state government. Coupled with the fact that all attorneys general are partisan, attorneys general are using this authority to assume leadership in areas such as immigration, gun control, climate change, criminal justice, consumer protection, ESG, antitrust and reproductive rights.
In the 30 years since he left office in Maine Tierney has developed a unique practice to advise attorneys general in these areas and others. Currently under contract with the new Attorney General of Arizona, next month he will be making an ethics presentation to all AGs at their annual meeting. Tierney currently teaches at Harvard Law School along with Former Maine Solicitor General Peter Brann. He is also the Director of the Harvard State Attorney General Clinic.
Tierney and his wife, novelist Elizabeth Strout, live in Brunswick
