Portland, ME. December 7, 2016 — The Maine Justice Foundation (MJF) launched its new LGBT Justice Fund at an event held at Holiday Inn by the Bay, and nearly 100 supporters and advocates attended. The fund is designated solely to ensure that vulnerable members of the LGBT community in Maine have access to civil legal aid.
Congressman and Gay Rights Advocate Barney Frank delivered the keynote address. Diana Scully, executive director of MJF, and Bill Robitzek, founder of the LGBT Justice Fund and incoming MJF board president, also spoke about legal access needs specific to the LGBT community.
“The movement for full equality for LGBT people has seen great progress, but the LGBT community still faces a number of hurdles when it comes to legal issues such as housing, benefits and personal safety,” said Scully. “This fund is poised to support the needs of this vulnerable population for decades to come.”
The founders of the fund have committed $60,000 to date, but Scully said the Foundation hopes to grow it to $1 million over time.
